Job Description

Join us for an interesting, short contract this summer as a Careers in Medicine Tutor. For this contract it is essential that you have QTS in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

Each summer, Stafford House welcome large groups of young international students (aged 14-17) on a study holiday, based in Canterbury. Students will possess English Level: Upper-Intermediate to Advanced levels of English, and so you do not need to have a qualification in teaching, EFL although this is a great opportunity to gain experience in this field.

This course is for students who want to explore the different career options in Medicine.


Careers in Medicine Tutor


  • Teach well-prepared classes according to our syllabus and guidelines

  • Prepare students for Careers in Medicine course related excursions as required

  • Contact and liaise with external speakers as required

  • Organise and register students for Crest Award Silver and First Aid Courses if required

YOUR PROFILE AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  1. To have read and understood the staff handbook and be fully conversant with our policies for the welfare and protection of children. At all times whilst on duty, staff are responsible for the care, welfare and safety of students whilst also ensuring they are following school rules.

  1. Teach our Careers in Medicine syllabus to a high standard, following our in-house syllabus.

  2. High standard completion of all academic paperwork, including registers and weekly plans, as directed by the DOS.

  3. Be observed by the Director of Studies or Senior Teacher. Additional feedback may be given at the course end.

  1. Attend meetings as arranged by the Director of Studies.

  1. Admin duties as designated by the Director of Studies.

  1. Encourage the involvement of students in activities and events, leading by example.

  2. Lanyards and ID badges must be worn at all times whilst on duty

  3. Ensure that all Stafford House Health & Safety policies are implemented and monitored.

  1. Attend final certificate ceremony


ABOUT YOU


Essential

  • Qualified Teacher Status in Biology, Chemistry or Physics (QTS)

  • Educated to degree level in science related subject

  • Knowledge and experience of preparing students for UKCAT and BMAT medical school entry exams

  • Genuine interest in both the teaching and welfare of young students

  • Enjoy working with young students in out-of-class activities and excursions

  • Flexibility, and a willingness to undertake any duty in the job description

  • Enthusiastic and energetic approach

Desirable

  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in English or MFL, or equivalent*

  • Current First Aid certificate**

  • Laboratory healthy and safety certification

  • Experience of working in a summer school environment

  • Experience of teaching in an EAP context

  • Good IT skills

* Other TEFL qualifications may be acceptable if they have been validated by an external body, include a minimum of 6 hours of supervised teaching practice with genuine learners and 100 hours of input. Please note that one-day, weekend, online and distance learning courses are not considered equivalent.

** A £10 per week increment is payable to qualified staff who are prepared to take on first aid duties.
